The
religious and liturgical importance of the works-of-art which are present and of the
functions which are carried out in the Basilica is emphasized throughout the Work by
comments which are put into reference with the various sections.
The Sepulchre of Saint Peter has always been venerated and the building of the Constantinian
Basilica close to the tomb has permitted the celebration of the mysteries of faith and the
implementation of the most important and solemn Ecclesiastic events in all its popular and
community aspect, as reported from the Greek term leitourghia. The present Basilica has
inherited and increased the vitality and magnificence of the previous one.
Deeply reformed by the Concilio Vaticano II, the catholic liturgy identifies as subject of
liturgical celebration the assembly of the God multitude under the presidency of the
bishop or one of his representatives .
In this section, the Basilica is seen with the eyes of the Christian believer and it
presents the visitor and the scholar with an interesting and new interpretative key.
